First and foremost, I would like to thank NetGalley and Ten Speed Press for the opportunity to have a limited time copy of Jodi Cohen’s book so I may give an honest review.
What got me interested in this book?
Just the title was quite a teaser: Essential Oils to Boost the Brain & Heal the Body, 5 Steps to Calm Anxiety, Sleep Better & Reduce Inflammation to Regain Control of Your Health.
Most of the clients I see have at least one of the above-mentioned symptoms. And I bet many readers are now nodding their head in agreement. Essential Oils are one of the most beautiful therapeutic aids we have. They are easy to use and most of them smell good. Client compliance is at its best.
What I liked about this book?
It is full enough of scientific detail without overwhelming the reader. Most of the book is spent describing in laymen’s language how essential oils interact with the human body, specifically the brain. In reading the book I had the impression that Cohen not only knew essential oils but also was basing her advice from a strong knowledge of the human body in the wholistic way.
It is praiseworthy the way she integrates various healing arts and the use of essential oils. For example, the use of essential oils not only through inhalation but also by topical application on specific parts of the body that are linked to Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and reflexology points. And no worries easy to understand diagrams are there to follow.
The bulk of the book is given to the 5 steps this book is named after. The steps are:
- Shifting the Nervous System into the Parasympathetic Gear
- Improving Sleep and Detoxifying the Brain
- Fuelling Your Brain with Energy to Heal
- Reducing Stress, Improving Mood, and Losing Weight
- Modulating Your Immune System and Calming Inflammation
Each part is in detail explained both from the anatomical and biochemical side, as always in a comprehensible manner. I particularly liked the all-embracing description of the Vagus nerve in the body and all its myriad implications in the body. So do not just expect things dealing with the brain but also the whole body from lungs, circulation, reproductive organs to the digestive system and much more.
Part two of the book looks back at the 5 steps and integrates them in everyday suggested therapy. In this part of the book, you will find the essential oils blends used for specific issues, how to formulate them plus where and how many times to employ them. The only thing I found a bit approximate in this section is how to dilute the pure essential oil blends without losing the potency of the blend.
Would I recommend this book?
Yes. In this book you shall find information that normally you will find dispersed in several books. It is simple to read and easy to reference thanks to a handy index at the end of the book.
